Top 4 SharePoint Benefits

Top 4 SharePoint Benefits

4. Document Management
Document versioning and search capabilities ares some easy wins with a SharePoint deployment.  The ability to categorize documents through "Content Types" offer organizations a way to easily track all of their internal documents and classify them so that they're easy to find and track, and eliminates the document sprawl and duplication that can occur with a traditional file sharing system.

3. Project Management
Managing projects is a breeze with Microsoft SharePoint.  Create a new site and you instantly have a calendar for all project related meetings, a place to store all documents related to your project including budgets, timelines, contacts and responsibilities.  Discussion boards also related to the project are contained within your project management site.

2. PerformancePoint
Since SharePoint 2010 there are fantastic charting and dashboarding capabilities built into SharePoint that require absolutely zero coding.  This is truly a benefit that can make any organization more productive with a limited amount of effort.  Consider being able to make employees accountable for their responsibilites and then tracking their performance using SharePoint dashboards.  The productivity improvements are real and immediate.  Additionally tracking sales, opportunities and expenses and then being able to drill down and understand where your best sales, opportunities and worst and most troublesome expenses come from is key in helping your organization make important business decisions.

1. Workflows (The Crown Jewels of SharePoint)
The example I love to give all the time that really hits home is where a staff member within your organization wants to hire a new employee.  Immediately there are a number of possible things that need to happen, such as notification to HR that someone has been hired and there is paperwork that needs to be completed before the start date, IT needs to be notified to setup a computer and email, security may need to create a parking pass or entry pass.  Once an online SharePoint form has been completed, notification would be sent to each of these departments indicating their requirement to complete a task.  Once each of the tasks has been completed then notification would be sent back to the hiring manager that initiated the request.  If the tasks aren't completed by a deadline then there would be either a reminder or escalation to help move the task along.
